Congratulations to our very own Laura Himler, on being named the 2025 Outstanding Biology Teacher Awardee (OBTA) for the state of Pennsylvania! The OBTA was created by the National Association of Biology Teachers in 1962 and is one of the association’s most prestigious awards. Each year, the NABT attempts to identify the best biology and life science teacher in each of the 50 states, Washington, DC, the Canadian provinces, Puerto Rico, and overseas territories. Candidates are judged on their teaching ability and experience, cooperativeness in the school and community, and student-teacher relationships. Laura joins the tradition of excellence that represents the OBTA. This is a phenomenal and incredibly well-deserved achievement for Laura and a moment of immense pride for our school and district! Congratulations Laura!!!
Four amazing Vikings (Raven Albrecht, Aja Cole, Alex Magliocco & Lillian Vinson) participated in a student advocacy program through the MCIU this year called Voices for Education. Yesterday, they met with Senator Amanda Cappelletti & Representative Tim Briggs to advocate for student mental health resources & teacher support. Great advocates, role models & Vikings!
Our very own UMAHS Senior, Evan Wang, has been named the National Youth Poet Laureate for 2025. A prestigious award, made popular after the original winner, Amanda Gorman, spoke at President Biden's Inauguration is one of the highest honors for a young poet and not only recognizes Evan for his outstanding poetry, but also for his civic engagement, youth leadership and the social impact of his work. He was selected over three other regional finalists at a ceremony on May 2nd at Hunter College in New York City and will spend the next year serving as an ambassador for youth poetry & civic engagement. Congratulations to Evan on this incredible national honor!
April 10th was another successful & record-breaking Mini-Thon at UMAHS! The students raised $33,161.49 for pediatric cancer families & research. Along the way, they had a great time dancing, playing games, doing the belly flop competition, eating and having fun! FTK! Great job Vikings! A special thank you to all of our donors, corporate sponsors, faculty chaperones & our amazing student leaders and participants!
